English follows below…

English:

I have just signed some papers to give permission to have my left eye treated with a corneal transplantation. The surgery will be a partial transplantation (DALK) where the endothelium will be preserved. This has some advantages such as quicker healing, less chance of graft rejection and more robustness of the graft in the long term.

In addition to the surgery I will also partake in a clinical trial which will investigate new techniques in separating the layers of the cornea.

The doctor has indicated surgery should take place in about half a year. After the surgery I will of course update this weblog with my experiences.

I recently bought a Raspberry Pi to experiment with. The first things I did with it was connecting and reading out Maxim Integrated DS1820 one wire temperature sensor and the cheap Chinese DHT11 temperature / relative humidity sensor.

To connect the sensors, I soldered some female pin headers to a piece of PCB. For the one wire network I soldered a 4.7K resistor between Vcc on pin1 (3.3V) and GPIO4 on pin 7. GPIO4 is the data pin for one wire, I used GPIO2 as the data pin for the DHT11. DHT11 “modules” with a PCB and three pins have their own pull up resistor, the separate 4 pin sensors don’t. Shown below is the quick setup, I soldered the DS1820 directly to the PCB, and connected the DHT11 with some wires for 3.3V, data and ground.

GPIO pinouts differ between the Raspberry Pi versions, I found the following pinout to be correct for my Raspberry Pi, a model A version 2.

Reading out the sensors is easy. For the DS1820, load the required kernel modules which are included in the Raspbian Linux distribution:

sudo modprobe w1-gpio

sudo modprobe w1-therm

Better yet, add the modules to /etc/modules so that they are loaded at boot time

When the modules are loaded, the one wire sensors can be found as follows:

johan@raspberrypi ~ $ ls /sys/bus/w1/devices/
10-000801f58124  w1_bus_master1

Reading out the sensor is done by cat’ing the file w1_slave in the directory with the long number (this is the unique serial of each one wire device):

johan@raspberrypi ~ $ cat /sys/bus/w1/devices/10-000801f58124/w1_slave
34 00 4b 46 ff ff 0a 10 52 : crc=52 YES
34 00 4b 46 ff ff 0a 10 52 t=26125

The command returns some hexadecimal values which say whether the CRC of the data from the sensor is correct, and a raw temperature value. To get the temperature divide by 1000.

Since I have never used DHT11 modules I concentrated on getting data logging working with them first.

The DHT11 sensors can be read out using the Adafruit DHTxx script. Instructions on getting this script can be found here.

To test a sensor, run the script, specifying the type of sensor and the GPIO pin it’s on:

johan@raspberrypi ~ $ sudo scripts/Adafruit-Raspberry-Pi-Python-Code/Adafruit_DHT_Driver
/Adafruit_DHT 11 2
Using pin #2
Data (39): 0x27 0x0 0x16 0x0 0x3d
Temp = 22 *C, Hum = 39 %

As you can see the sensor returns a temperature and relative humidity value. This data is processed and logged with the following script:

#!/bin/sh
# Script for polling DHT11 values for passing to SNMP
# Johan Boonstra 29/04/2013
#
LOGFILE=/var/log/dht11_1.log

# check arguments
if [ "$1" = "log" ]
then
echo -n $(date) >> $LOGFILE
# check that data is in fact numeric and not something else (when readout fails)
while  [ -z $(echo $temp | grep -E '^-?[0-9]*\.?[0-9]*$’) ]
do
# run readout script, tail last line, pipe to awk to extract data from column 3 or 7
temp=$(/home/johan/scripts/Adafruit-Raspberry-Pi-Python-Code/Adafruit_DHT_Driver/Adafruit_DHT 11 2 | tail -n1 | awk {‘ print $3′})
done
#echo label and temp/hum data to log file
echo -n ” temperature: ” >> $LOGFILE
echo -n $temp >> $LOGFILE
while  [ -z $(echo $humidity | grep -E '^-?[0-9]*\.?[0-9]*$’) ]
do
humidity=$(/home/johan/scripts/Adafruit-Raspberry-Pi-Python-Code/Adafruit_DHT_Driver/Adafruit_DHT 11 2 | tail -n1 | awk {‘ print $7′})
done
echo -n ” humidity: ” >> $LOGFILE
echo $humidity >> $LOGFILE
exit
fi

# display section to present data to SNMP
# check if log is up to date, updated in last 6 minutes
if [ `find $LOGFILE -mmin -6` ]
then
        # check arguments
        if [ "$1" = "temp" ]
        then
        #print temperature
        temp=$(tail -n1 $LOGFILE | awk {‘ print $8′})
        echo $temp
        exit
        fi
# check arguments
        if [ "$1" = "humidity" ]
        then
        #print humidity
        humidity=$(tail -n1 $LOGFILE | awk {‘ print $10′})
        echo $humidity
        exit
        fi

# give error message when log is not up to date
else
echo “Error – logfile too old”
fi

# output raw data for debugging when no argument is given
if [ "$1" = "" ]
then
/home/johan/scripts/Adafruit-Raspberry-Pi-Python-Code/Adafruit_DHT_Driver/Adafruit_DHT 11 2
fi

Update: watch out as this script does not check if something is already checking the sensor. I’m looking into a more robust script that runs continuously and checks if it’s already running.

Also: Compile the Adafruit code with BCM2835 libraries for better performance.

This script performs various functions. It can log, display temperature or humidity or display the raw output. Since polling the sensor sometimes fails, requires root and is slow, logging is done by calling the script with the log argument each 5 minutes using the following entry in /etc/crontab/:

*/5 * * * * root /home/johan/scripts/logDHT11_1 log

To interface with SNMP, the following lines are added to /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf :

extend .1.3.6.1.4.1.2021.2000.1 temp /home/johan/scripts/logDHT11_1 temp
extend .1.3.6.1.4.1.2021.2000.2 humidity /home/johan/scripts/logDHT11_1 humidity

To graph a value in monitoring software such as cacti, you need the correct OID which displays the desired information. To find it out, run snmpwalk on the Raspberry Pi:

johan@raspberrypi ~ $ snmpwalk -v2c -c public localhost .1.3.6.1.4.1.2021.2000.2  | grep
STRING
iso.3.6.1.4.1.2021.2000.2.2.1.2.8.104.117.109.105.100.105.116.121 = STRING: "/home/johan
/scripts/logDHT11_1"
iso.3.6.1.4.1.2021.2000.2.2.1.3.8.104.117.109.105.100.105.116.121 = STRING: "humidity"
iso.3.6.1.4.1.2021.2000.2.3.1.1.8.104.117.109.105.100.105.116.121 = STRING: "39"
iso.3.6.1.4.1.2021.2000.2.3.1.2.8.104.117.109.105.100.105.116.121 = STRING: "39"
iso.3.6.1.4.1.2021.2000.2.4.1.2.8.104.117.109.105.100.105.116.121.1 = STRING: "39"

I usually use the most unique OID from the list, never had any problems with it.

Following is the current graph of the relative humidity:

I recently bought a Ludlum Measurements model 2A survey meter on eBay from Obtanium. This is a nice meter which features the well known rugged Ludlum design, adjustable HV and 3 ranges of 500, 5000 and 50000 counts per minute.

Using a scintillation probe the meter easily saturates on the 500 cpm scale, and the 5k and 50k ranges are also overloaded with certain sources.

So I thought of adding a 500k cpm range. I already read the manuals and associated schematics to find out how to do this.

Ludlum model 2 and 3 offer about the same functionality and basically share the same PCB, circuit, knobs and switches. Depending on age and model there are certain differences, but a lot of the stuff and functionality is the same.

As far as I know all model 2/3 ratemeters have the same calibration board mounted underneath the front panel on the left. The board has a row of precision potmeters for the various ranges, HV and alarm adjust.

To add an extra range, I soldered in an extra 1M precision potmeter. Since the board seems to be used in Model 2 and 3 it already has traces and holes for this component. I mounted a switch on the front panel to choose between the x100 /50k cpm and the extra potmeter for the x1000/500k cpm range. I cut the traces to the potmeters and connected the trace going to the x100 pot to the middle pole of the switch and from the switch to the two potmeters.

The front panel already has a template for the extra hole, so I simply drilled it out. I added some labels to the switch and calibration hole.

Shown below are the mods done to the calibration board:

To calibrate the new range I fed a 8000 Hz, 1% duty cycle signal from a DSO Nano into the meter through a HV capacitor. This is not exactly the same as the Ludlum procedure but the signal generated the expected meter deviations on lower ranges. I turned the potmeter until the meter showed 480k cpm.

The result is a model 2 that can measure up to 500k cpm and more or less functions the same as the much more expensive (even secondhand) model 3.

I have a Cisco 1811 with a Zyxel P2812HNU-F1 VDSL modem connected to it in bridge mode. The Cisco gets the public IP address through DHCP.

I wanted to access the modem on it’s local IP address of 192.168.1.254. At first, this didn’t seem possible because all traffic out of the WAN interface is translated to the public IP address. To enable access to the modem I did the following:

First, I added a secondary IP address to the WAN interface, Fastethernet0:

interface fastethernet0
ip address 192.168.1.100 255.255.255.0 secondary

Then I added a nat pool to translate internal traffic with 192.168.1.100:

ip nat pool nat_to_modem 192.168.1.100 192.168.1.100 netmask 255.255.255.0

The global NAT command requires an access list to match traffic that is to be NATted. Here I define that all traffic to 192.168.1.0/24 is to be translated:

ip access-list extended nat_to_modem
permit ip any 192.168.1.0 0.0.0.255
deny   ip any any

To prevent any traffic to this subnet to be translated to the public IP address I added the same network to my default NAT access list:

ip access-list extended acl_nat
deny   ip any 192.168.1.0 0.0.0.255

To enable NAT translation I had to add a global NAT command:

ip nat inside source list nat_to_modem pool nat_to_modem overload

Because my default route points to the next hop of the ISP (default routes to interfaces that are not point to point create performance issues due to ARP tables overflowing) I had to add a static route to interface Fa0:

ip route 192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0 FastEthernet0

When using PPPoE this should not be neccesary.

This setup enables me to access the web interface of the modem. Unfortunately, due to a bug it stops functioning after a while or when resetting the WAN interface. Also, the configuration is not shown in the running config so a reload will also mess it up. But I figured out how it can be configured

I spend a lot of time watching video’s on YouTube. Lots of interesting channels about hardware hacking, radiation detection, electronics and stuff.

But lately something has changed. YouTube continually tries to push unrelated or unwanted videos on me. On the right side I used to see only videos that were more or less closely related to the video. But nowadays completely unrelated videos pop up. The recommendations seem to be based on two things:

- Whatever videos you watched in the past. But even with all the history deleted, videos that I watched continue to pop up on the right side, even when they are completely unrelated to the video being watched.

- Random stuff that is supposed to be “fun” but are rehashes of other videos, memes and stuff. It seems that YouTube sells these spots for $$$ to enable people to <del>promote</del> push their videos onto the YouTube audience.

Because I tend to search for rather specific subjects, it annoys me like hell that the recommended videos are filled with useless crap. If I search for something I want relevant results, not unrelated crap!

Here are some more examples of YouTube pushing completely unrelated and irrelevant stuff:

Looking for stuff on CDV-700 Geiger Counters? Guess you’re also looking for combat helicopters and high voltage experiments, just because you watched stuff like that some time ago:

Looking for some thrash metal to listen for? Guess you’re also interested in melting METAL instead of listening to it. You might also do something useful, get back to messing with voltage regulators!

Please YouTube, F$%^$%ck off with irrelevant recommendations, it’s highly annoying!

I grew up listening a lot of metal. When you are young you will get easily impressed by all kinds of music. I used to listen to highly accessible and melodic stuff, such as power metal, gothic metal, black metal with lots of keyboards. I don’t listen to much of that stuff anymore. As I got older I began listening to less technical and melodic music. One of the genres I knew but didn’t interest me in particular was thrash metal. Sure, as virtually every young metal listener I discovered bands like Metallica, Megadeth, Sepultura, Slayer etc…

My interest in (hardcore) punk music of more recent years brought me back to listening thrash. Similar to punk it is loud, fast, contains anti-establishment lyrics and usually doesn’t dwell too much on the technical stuff.

Some years ago thrash metal got a revival and showed that there are still a lot of good bands around. Also, some bands decided to use a more humorous approach in the lyrics. Since I like extreme music but often find the lyrics crap (the usual stuff about death, destruction, the apocalypse etc. over and over again) I think this is a good thing because in the end, a lot of people go to gigs to drink some beers and have fun!

So, here some fine examples of thrash

Kreator, one of the big German thrash bands, still raging on after decades:

Municipal Waste is one of the revival bands and is highly influenced by crossover thrash. Also they make funny lyrics and videos which is GOOD!

Again, German thrash nails it. Sodom are still around, but I like their old albums best, especially Persecution Mania because of its black metal influences and old school “analog” production. Also, great audible bass guitar, something I often miss in metal.

Gama Bomb is another one of them fun bands. Like ‘em

Fueled by Fire sounds kind of old school especially the vocals, which are perfect because they are just heavy metal enough without going all AAAAAAAHHHH

And the last one I came up with, Flesh Made Sin, a Dutch thrash metal band. AFAIK they don’t exist anymore, but they made some great stuff:
