Het gaat na mijn lensproblemen met het linkeroog nog steeds matig met mijn ogen. Lenstolerantie links is verminderd waardoor ik niet altijd kan doen wat ik wil. Gelukkig lijkt het wel over het algemeen voldoende te zijn om een redelijk normale dag vol te maken.

Omdat het UMC wat traag was met het inplannen van diverse onderzoeken en het ondernemen van actie, vooral wat betreft mijn rechteroog is er een brief naar ze uitgegaan met de vraag het allemaal een stuk serieuzer te nemen aangezien mijn praktische zicht achteruit lijkt te lopen en er sneller actie moet worden ondernomen.

Dat resulteerde vorige week in een consult bij Dr. Tahzib en Dr. van der Lelij van het UMC. Zij keken nog eens goed naar het rechteroogoog en hebben er ook voor gezorgd dat onderzoeken die voor eind februari stonden vorige week vrijdag zijn uitgevoerd.

Het doel van de onderzoeken was te kijken of mijn rechteroog schade heeft opgelopen van de verhoogde oogdruk die ik had en of daar maatregelen tegen genomen moeten worden. Ik zit namelijk op de maximale glaucoombehandeling en dat betekent dat er bij verdere verhoging van de oogdruk er geen verdere behandeling mogelijk is. De medicatie zorgt wel momenteel voor een continu lage oogdruk waardoor mijn rechteroog over het algemeen beter was dan eerst.

Deze onderzoeken zijn inmiddels uitgevoerd. Het ging om een dagcurve waarbij de oogdruk over de dag wordt, een OCT scan waarbij de dikte van de oogzenuw wordt vastgesteld een een gezichtsveldonderzoek.

Afgelopen dinsdag kreeg ik hier de resultaten van. Helaas is er vastgesteld dat mijn oogzenuw zwakke punten vertoont en dat een deel van mijn gezichtsveld minder gevoelig is geworden. Ik heb dus door de verhoogde oogdruk glaucoom opgelopen, zij het wel in een geringe mate.

Komende tijd zal de aandacht dus liggen op het voorkomen van verdere schade aan mijn oog. Hiervoor zijn de mogelijkheden bij glaucoom echter zeer uitgebreid. Zeker omdat het vroeg is vastgesteld en de oogdruk momenteel laag is verwacht ik geen verdere ontwikkeling van dit probleem.

Er is besloten om mijn oog te opereren een zgn. Baerveldt implantaat te plaatsen. Dit is een buisje dat in de voorste oogkamer achter het hoorvlies uitkomt en is verbonden met een “plaat” welke aan de oogbol wordt bevestigd. Door het buisje wordt overtollig oogvocht welke te hoge oogdruk veroorzaakt afgevoerd.

Resultaar van de behandeling is dat de oogdruk permanent met minder of geen medicijnen laag blijft en dat nieuwe transplanties mogelijk blijven omdat het oog beter onstekingsremmers (welke de oogdruk chronisch kunnen verhogen) kan verdragen.

De operatie zal in de komende maanden plaatsvinden, op 8 februari heb ik een preoperatief onderzoek want deze operatie vindt helaas (of niet?) plaats onder algehele verdoving.

Uiteraard zal ik proberen om na de operatie mijn ervaringen verder op deze website te omschrijven.

English summary:

Last week I had an appointment with two ophthalmologists at the Utrecht University Medical Center to examine my eye again. A letter was sent to them because further examinations were planned a bit too far in the future in my opinion.

Last week I also had the tests that were originally planned for the end of February. Unfortunately these tests have shown that my right eye shows signs of glaucoma due to the period of high intraocular pressure I experienced. A portion of my right eye’s vision has weakened in sensivity to light and the optic nerve shows some weak areas.

Luckily this all was detected very early and the glaucoma is very slight. It has been decided that a glaucoma drainage device (Baerveldt) is needed to permantently lower the intraocular pressure and reduce the need for medication as I am now on the maximum amount of meds to lower the eye pressure. If it ever rises again there is no way of preventing additional damage to the optic nerve.

Surgery will be performed in the following months. I don’t know what the impact will be but if I am able I will try to update this website about my experiences.

Just some venting,

Why on earth is every interesting technical discussion forum on Yahoo Groups? I absolutely loathe its design. When requesting the main forum it presents you with unthreaded, ungrouped messages by date. To group messages by thread you have to click a link, and even then you have to click each message separately just to view it. It’s 2012 damnit, stupid threaded message boards should be a thing of the past!

It absolutely puzzles me why certain technical stuff ends up on Yahoo Groups. Especially hamradio and geiger counter stuff seems to end up on Yahoo Groups by default. Maybe people setting up these groups favor the usenet style interface because they are somewhat older than me and continue to use the annoying, threaded usenet-style interface because that is what they initially came in contact with when first using the net. Don’t get me started on search results…

(BTW, I found a modern message board focused on geiger counters and all kinds of radiation detection stuff, guess what, it’s only in Italian!)

Another annoyance of me lately has been expensive USB to TTL serial adapters. Most are based on the well known FTDI chip which is used on Arduino boards. Simple adapters using this chip have prices ranging in the €/$10-25 range, just for a simple device presenting a serial port to the host operating system and outputting TTL levels.
I guess the CEO of FTDI gets a nice bonus each year, selling loads of these chips for $3 when they likely cost pennies to make.

I’m still looking into a decent alternative, €15 TTL adapters suck!

Tranentest / Tear testing @ Oogziekenhuis Rotterdam

English summary below

Afgelopen week ben ik vanwege de matige toestand van mijn getransplanteerde oog langs het Oogziekenhuis in Rotterdam geweest. Uiteraard heb ik ook gelijk de problemen met mijn linkeroog aangekaart.

Het was een productief bezoek want ondanks de drukte en het lang wachten op de arts en overleg met andere artsen werd er een concreet oordeel gegeven. Mijn rechteroog moet op termijn een nieuwe transplantatie ondergaan omdat de toestand van het transplantaat slechter is geworden en dat hier met medicijnen weinig aan te doen is. Er zal vanwege de hoge oogdruk wel door een glaucoomspecialist naar het oog gekeken moeten worden om te kijken of de oogdruk operatief (dmv een drain) tijdelijk verlaagd kan worden. Na de hertransplantatie moeten namelijk dezelfde medicijnen worden gebruikt waar ik nu al slecht op reageer met een te hoge oogdruk.

Wat betreft mijn linkeroog dacht men in het OZR aan crosslinking om hopelijk de slechte lenstolerantie van de laatste tijd mee te verbeteren en een transplantatie hopelijk voorlopig te kunnen vermijden. Men zag eigenlijk niks van de droogheid die eerder in het UMC werd gezien en vond dat de lens weer in kon. Het lijkt erop dat de problemen meer door slechte lenstolerantie dan door droogheid komen.

Het OZR heeft dit alles samengevat in een brief welke richting het UMC gaat.

Ik ben de dag erna naar het UMC geweest waar al bekend was dat ik in het OZR was geweest, de arts in het UMC en die in het OZR hebben namelijk regelmatig mailcontact. De brief was uiteraard nog niet binnen maar de arts die de supervisie heeft gaf wel aan dat de inhoud van de brief te verwachten was. Ze heeft voor het einde van het jaar een afspraak ingepland om een glaucoomspecialist naar het oog te laten kijken aangezien de druk van het oog eerst omlaag moet voordat er operaties plaatsvinden.

Ik ben aan de ene kant blij dat er nu wat schot in zit maar aan de andere kant maak ik me zorgen over het linkeroog waar ik afhankelijk ben voor mijn werk en eigenlijk alles wat een beetje normaal zicht vereist.

Last week I visited the Rotterdam Eye Hospital for a second opinion on the status of my right, transplanted eye which has become increasingly problematic. The doctors in Rotterdam argued that my right eye needs a retransplant because the current transplanted cornea will likely not become better. First however, the eye pressure has to drop because a new transplant requires large doses of medicine which increase eye pressure even further. They suggested that first a glaucoma specialist has to examine the eye and see if it’s posssible to surgically lower the eye pressure by temporalily implanting a drainage device.

Of course they also looked at my left eye which has had problems with dryness and low lens tolerance. They said that corneal crosslinking was an option consider to delay or postpone a corneal transplantation. Also, if a transplant was needed they suggested that the UMC looks into the possibility of doing a partial transplantation to enable a quicker recovery and lower chance of complications.

The doctors sent a letter to the Utrecht University Hospital with their findings.

The next day I visited the UMC and talked to the doctor who supervises my corneal transplant. She hadn’t received the letter yet of course, but agreed on the contents that I described to her. She has made an appointment before the end of the year to have a glaucoma specialist examine my right eye and look into (surgical) options to lower the eye pressure.

So, in the end, a little vigilance paid off, I got other doctors to look at my eyes and suggest that action has to be taken to improve my vision. On the other hand I am worried about my left eye, if lens tolerance stays low this will have a continuous impact on my life.

Via Ebay wat eitjes van Triops cancriformis besteld, de europese ondersoort. Ik heb eerder deze soort proberen te kweken maar de eitjes kwamen niet uit. Nu dus een nieuwe poging en er is leven in mijn kweekbakje. Eitjes lijken wat langzamer uit te komen en ook de ontwikkeling van de larven verloopt minder snel dan bij T. longicaudatus. Nu is het wachten op verdere ontwikkeling en hopelijk veel eitjes, want veel leek er niet tussen het zand te zitten…

On Ebay I scored some Triops cancriformis eggs, of the European subspecies. I tried breeding this species earlier but it failed for some reason. So, I tried again and now there is life in the hatching tank. Eggs seem to hatch somewhat slower than T. longicaudatus and development also seems slower. Now it’s waiting for further growth and hopefully harvesting of some eggs as the package I received didn’t seem to contain that many eggs.

Met mijn ogen gaat het matig tot redelijk. Nog steeds regelmatig pijn aan het oog door “blaasjes” welke aan het oogoppervlak zitten. Wel lijkt het erop dat de problemen zich minder vaak voordoen en sneller weer weg zijn.

Twee weken geleden had ik echter iets anders. Bij opstaan vanuit een liggende positie, bijvoorbeeld bij het opstaan, verloor ik na een seconde of 2 staan tijdelijk het zicht in het rechteroog. Tijdelijk zichtsverlies komt eigenlijk vooral met beide ogen voor door een tijdelijk lagere bloeddruk. In het UMC werd er uiteraard snel naar gekeken aangezien dit een nogal typisch verschijnsel was. In de eerste instantie werd er niks bijzonders  vastgesteld. Het netvlies zag er goed uit en de oogdruk leek normaal, 14 mmHg. Men verwees mij door naar de huisarts welke welke mijn bloeddruk liggend en staand heeft gemeten en onvoldoende verschil meette om wegval door te lage bloeddruk te verklaren.

Uiteindelijk toch maar weer langs het UMC gegaan alwaar dr. de Hoog welke ook capabel mijn afstoting heeft behandeld vaststelde dat mijn oogdruk omhoog was geschoten naar 33, wat echt teveel is en een goede verklaring was voor de symptomen. Als de oogdruk te hoog is kan het zicht wegvallen aangezien deze druk bij het opstaan tijdelijk de lagere bloeddruk “overwint” en de bloedtoevoer afknijpt. Ik kreeg een recept mee voor voor extra oogdrukremmers en de symptomen zijn bijna helemaal verdwenen.

Het is trouwens niet prettig om een te hoge oogdruk te hebben, afgezien van de wegval van zicht had ik ook een vage,doffe pijn in het oog en lichtflitsen bij het snel bewegen van het oog.

Het zicht is trouwens ook beter geworden met de lagere oogdruk. De oogarts gaf ook aan dat de mistigheid van het oog wat ik de laatste tijd ervoer waarschijnlijk ook aan de hoge oogdruk te wijten was.

Zoals ik al eerder aangaf ben ik verder niet bijzonder tevreden met de behandeling in het algemeen door het UMC en heb ik een second opinion aangevraagd bij het Oogziekenhuis Rotterdam om wat meer duidelijkheid over de toekomst van mijn oog en het transplantaat te krijgen, alsmede beter advies wat betreft eventuele aanpassing van een lens. Helaas heeft het OZR het erg druk en kan ik waarschijnlijk nog een maand wachten totdat mijn dossier wordt beoordeeld. Afwachten dus.

Het UMC maakte trouwens ook een aantal foto’s voor latere referentie, welke ik uiteraard heb weten te bemachtigen zoals in dit artikel te zien is.

My right eye has been quite ok, I am still experiencing slight pain sometimes, caused by blistering of the cornea surface. However, the frequency and duration of the blistering seems to have decreased over time after the rejection.

Two weeks ago  I expirienced something different: my right eye lost vision temporarily when standing up after lying down. The hospital and the general practitioner examined my eye, retina and blood pressure but found no problems. After visiting the GP I went back to the hospital and suddenly it was discoverd by the ophthalmologist that my eye pressure had soared to 33 mmHg, which is really too high (normal is 10-20). I was treated with pressure lowering eyedrops and the symptoms have decreased quickly. Also, sight is better because the eye is more clear because less fluid is forced into the cornea.

Having a high eye pressure can be quite tiring, I experienced a slight, dull pain in my head near the affected eye and also saw flashes of light when moving my eye quickly from side to side. These symptoms have also vanished due to the eye drops.

I am still waiting to get a second opinion at the Eye Hospital of Rotterdam to get a different doctors view on the future of my eye and the possibility of wearing a lens again. According to the hospital it could take another month before my case will be reviewed.

As you can see in this article, I was able to get the pictures of my eye that the Utrecht University Hospital took.

In the picture you can see the HV generator on the top of the board, on the lower left the Arduino standalone parts along with a MAX232 as a level converter for easy serial hookup and on the right two tubes connected in parallel, a SI-29BG (beta and gamma) and a SI-12B for added alpha sensivity. Also shown are the USB>Serial adapter and a separate USB connector to provide 5V to the board.

I have had it running for some weeks with a Russian SI-29BG hard beta and gamma tube. These are nice, very sturdy tubes to experiment with. They easily detect natural background radiation and K-40 from a bag of Potassium Chloride.As I already explained I have connected two tubes in parallel. There wasn’t that much variation in background radiation, (see below) even after heavy rainfall so I am now going to watch whether alpha sensivity makes any difference.

Also, the SI-12B is kind of useless on its own, it is not very sensitive to beta and gamma but is able to detect alpha quite well due to its mica window.

Scripting

I have also changed my scripting on both Linux and Arduino to make everything easier to test and make it fail gracefully when the counter stops functioning for some reason. It also now works in Cacti with a GAUGE type of data, not a counter. This prevents spikes when the counter is reset or temporarily disconnected or offline. The script is as follows:

I have put everything in one script and created functions to log the counts over  the last 5 minutes or display the last logged 5 minute count. If the logfile wasn’t updated properly it will return an error, causing Cacti to not record a value and show the error in its logfile. The script is connected to SNMP as described in my original article.

Basically, it counts the pulses, outputs the last five minute count every 10 seconds using the serial port and clears the counter after 5 minutes preventing any overflows of the unsigned long value (very unlikely). It also gives a very short tone with each interrupt which results in a little clicking sound. The random clicking helps me get to sleep quicker .

Wat betreft mijn ogen gaat het momenteel goed en matig. Mijn linkeroog heeft een nieuwe sclerale lens gekregen die behoorlijk scherper zicht geeft. Ik heb mijn computer nu op een hogere resolutie staan omdat ik weer wat beter kan zien.

Met mijn rechteroog gaat het helaas minder goed. Na de afstotingsreactie is de algehele toestand van dat oog niet beter geworden. Er slaan regelmatig pijnlijke putjes in het oogoppervlak bij de verdikte plek in het transplantaat en het restzicht is slechter geworden, het oog is ook vaker mistig omdat vocht blijkbaar niet goed wordt afgevoerd. In de avond kan het zicht echter behoorlijk goed zijn.

Ik heb deze klachten bij het UMC aangekaart maar achteraf gezien ben ik van mening dat men niet open heeft gecommuniceerd. Met een transplantaat wat problematisch is zijn de behandelopties beperkt. Men zal niet zonder meer gaan hertransplanteren aangezien dit de kans op complicaties verder verhoogt. Dit werd mij echter niet tijdens het consult verteld. De arts die supervisie heeft zei vreemd genoeg dat als ik ontevreden was met het resultaat ik maar contact met de arts moest opnemen die de operatie heeft uitgevoerd, mijn verwachting zou te optimistisch zijn. De volgende afspraak zou over een half jaar moeten zijn, druppels Vexol afbouwen naar 1x per dag over een periode van 3 maanden.

Uiteindelijk moest ik van mijn lenzenspecialist vorige week horen dat hij vond dat het oog in een matige toestand is en dat er maar beter geen lens in kan omdat stress een nieuwe afstoting zou kunnen uitlokken. Mijn lenzenspecialist is geen arts maar gezien zijn niet geringe ervaring met lenzen en transplantaties hecht ik wel aan zijn mening.
Overigens vond de arts in het UMC dat de lens er wel weer in kon, ondanks dat ik duidelijk maakte dat het oog (bij het consult niet aanwezige) pijnlijke droge plekken vertoont!

Mijn lenzenspecialist heeft mij aangeraden een second opinion bij het Oogziekenhuis in Rotterdam te regelen, en dat heb ik uiteraard ook gedaan.

Ik hou er niet van om medici te bekritiseren aangezien ik niet geloof dat ze structureel dingen niet goed doen maar ik ben toch teleurgesteld in de gang van zaken zoals ik ze heb ervaren.

Als ik in het Oogziekenhuis ben geweest volgt er uiteraard een nieuwe update!

Regarding my eyes I have both good and bad news. The good news is that I got a new scleral lens for my left eye. It has significantly increased my eyesight which is good, because my right eye is still problematic.
After the rejection episode the eye is still sensitive. Sometimes there are painful dry spots in the eye and vision can be quite cloudy in the morning. Vision varies wildly, sometimes uncorrected eyesight is quite good in the evening.

I have been to the doctor who checked the eye and said it seemed calm, no signs of rejection visible. I explained that I was still experiencing the dry spots but for some reason this was ignored. They said I could try wearing the lens again. I explained that I was unhappy about the state of my eye. Their answer was that my expectations could be too high and that I should talk to the doctor who performed the surgery, who no longer works at the hospital.

I suspected that I wasn’t told the whole truth and a visit to my lens specialist confirmed this. He examined my eye and wasn’t really positive about its condition. He advised against wearing a lens because stress on the eye could trigger a new rejection. He advised me to get a second opinion at the Eye Hospital of Rotterdam.

When I have had my consult at Rotterdam I will of course tell this in a new update!

On the internet there lots of DIY people showing off their homebuilt Geiger counter circuits, complete with microprocessors and LCD’s calculating and displaying count rates and often the dose rate in microsieverts/roentgen per hour.

The last thing surely makes a project look more impressive with the floating point number with a weird unit that most people are unfamiliar with. It’s not a big deal with DIY setups but there are lots of mentions of sending projects to Japan to help people over there “measure” contamination.

I would like to explain something I think is overlooked when implementing these projects:

You cannot convert counts per minute accurately to sieverts or roentgen per hour

If you look up information of a tube it will often specify how sensitive it is to gamma radiation of a certain isotope. For example, the specification of the widely used LND712 end window tube reads:

Gamma sensitivity:  18 counts per second = 1 mR/hr (Co60)

The tube is calibrated against a known gamma source, and the counts per minute to R/hr is only valid for gamma radiation emitted by Co-60.

In real life,  all kinds of radiation of different isotopes cause GM tube discharges. A GM tube does not give information about the particle/ray energy, it only indicates that something was able to ionize the gas in the tube. It doesn´t matter whether the tube detected a high energy secondary cosmic ray, or some weak beta particle just being able to penetrate the tube, it will give the same loud click.

However, this does not mean GM tubes are useless. They will detect most beta and gamma radiation and alphas (pancake, end window tubes) so most of the time they will give you information about whether something is radioactive or not, and how radioactive,  relative to the background. For example. I was able to measure that a porcelain mug I have is very slightly above background.

There are also other purposes for geiger counters in experiments. If you make an array of tubes and connect them to a microcontroller you can actually count particles that come from a certain direction, from space for example. It should also be possible to detect radon daughters decaying by pushing air through a filter and measure the radioactivity of the filter afterwards.

So, even with a  `simple` geiger muller tube you can perform interesting experiments.

Disclaimer: I am not a scientist. When you want to accurately measure radiation for some official purpose, consult a nuclear physicist.

De laatste tijd heb ik helaas erg veel last gehad van mijn oog door terugkerende afstotingsverschijnselen. Vorige week dinsdag (10/5) was het goed mis. Ik werd wakker met enorm mistig zicht en een vuurrood oog.  Ik had het de vorige avond al een beetje voelen aankomen, het oog was toen al aan de kant van mijn neus rood aan het worden.

Ik heb meteen met het ziekenhuis gebeld waar ik om 9 uur een afspraak had gemaakt. Ik heb echter gezien de extreme last maar een taxi gebeld om zo vroeg mogelijk in het ziekenhuis aanwezig te zijn, men zou wel doorhebben dat het niet in orde was.

In het ziekenhuis werd er inderdaad vrij snel naar het oog gekeken. Ik voelde mij behoorlijk slecht, het oog was ook verschrikkelijk lichtgevoelig. De onderzoekende oogarts stelde vast dat er sprake was van een forse afstotingsreactie. In het oogvocht waren cellen (witte bloedcellen) aanwezig en veel fibrine, een eiwit wat wordt afgegeven bij onstekingsreacties. Volgens de arts probeerde mijn lichaam het vreemde weefsel er uit te werken. Om dat tegen te gaan werd er een nieuwe injectie met een onstekingsremmer rechts bovenin het oog toegediend. Verder moest ik om het uur met pred forte druppelen. Voor ‘s nachts moest ik een oogzalf, Tobradex, gebruiken

Ik heb de rest van de dag bij mijn ouders doorgebracht waar ik maar op een donker gemaakte kamer ben gaan liggen met een wekker op de mobiele telefoon om op tijd de druppels in te doen. In de loop van de middag ging het echter al een stuk beter. Ik ben in de avond weer naar huis gegaan maar vanwege vermoeidheid pas donderdag weer naar mijn werk gegaan. Uiteraard was deze dag behoorlijk vermoeiend. De vrijdag ben ik ook naar werk gegaan voor een uur of 2 in de ochtend aangezien ik die dag weer een afspraak had.

Gelukkig is het vanaf toen alleen maar beter gegaan. De arts die ook dinsdag mij had gezien onderzocht het oog en gaf aan dat het erg snel ging met de afname van afstotingsverschijnselen. Het oog was helderder en de fibrine snel aan het verdwijnen.

Deze lijn heeft zich tot nu (21/5) voortgezet, het oog is niet meer rood (afgezien van wat bloederige plekken in het oogwit door de injecties) en het zicht is vreemd genoeg helderder dan ooit, ik kan momenteel met mijn rechteroog ongecorrigeerd zien wat ik nu typ! De oogdruppels zijn gereduceerd tot 4x pred forte, 2x Combigan (oogdrukremmer) per dag en ‘s nachts nog steeds de oogzalf.

Ik ben voorzichtig optimistisch maar besef dat het allemaal een kwestie van geduld is, en mijn bruikbare, gecorrigeerde zicht ben ik nog steeds kwijt.

Lately I have been experiencing recurrent rejection symptoms of my corneal graft. Over the last weeks I had three seperate rejection episodes which have been successfully treated. However the last one was really bad. I woke up on Tuesday 10th of May with a bloodshot and extremely light sensitive eye. Since the surgery I dind’t experience this kind of discomfort in my eye. I of course immediately called the hospital for a checkup. There the doctor diagnosed, again a major rejection of my corneal graft. It was treated with a strong corticosteroid injection in the eye and I had to use prednisolone eyedrops hourly for the next two days. During the night I had to use Tobradex ointment which is a medicine with a corticosteroid and antibacterial agent.

During that day I mostly slept with an alarm on my mobile phone for the eye drops. At the end of the afternoon I felt a lot better. However I felt quite fatigued over the following days. Friday I visited the hospital again and the doctor was surprised to see the eye in much better condition.

Until now my eye has steadily improved in both comfort and vision (I can read text on my computer uncorrected with my right eye) but of course the eye is still closely monitored by checkups. The prednisolone eyedrops have been reduced to four times a day and I still have to use the ointment at night.

I am optimistic but I also realise that with these things you have to be patient…

Well, you could say that’s the free market in action. But it wouldn’t surprise me if prices are driven up by people not actually needing geiger counters but buying them anyway out of fear while they are not likely to experience any effects of the disaster.

Today I saw something much worse, some German on Ebay trying to sell a “geiger counter” which actually is a high range survey meter, a CDV715 according to the picture.

This person is even recommending this device to Japanese people. I would say that is a very bad recommendation because:

• this meter is high range, if the needle moves you are likely in the exclusion zone around the reactors where one shouldn’t be anyway.
• it will not measure smaller amounts of radiation, you cannot use it to check whether food or water has been contaminated or not, or compare contamination levels.
• it will mostly detect gamma radiation, so it won’t properly detect the beta radiation coming from the Iodine-131 release from the reactors which is something you really want to be able to measure.

It kind of sickens me that there are people trying to make money of this disaster while thousands of Japanese died and more are homeless, and have to cope with possible effects of fallout from the leaking reactors.

Finally, €199 is way overpriced for a survey meter, I bought a German made one for a mere €10. An original Civil Defense CDV715 should cost €100 at most.
