I own a CDV-700 geiger counter of which the tube stopped working. It turns out that replacement tubes are both hard to find and expensive. The simplest option is to buy the LND 720 which basically is a drop-in replacement that should cost about $100.

It’s also possible to use cheaper, easier to find tubes with the CDV-700.  I found the following post from radio amateur K0FF on the “Geiger Counter Enthousiasts”  group on Yahoo groups. Afgelopen vrijdag werd ik wakker met een vuurrood oog nadat ik de vorige avond al wat irritatie had. Kijken naar lichtbronnen gaf ook minder prettige pijnsteken in het oog. Zoals het hoort maar gelijk met een UMC gebeld waar ik dezelfde ochtend nog langsging. Daar stelde men vast dat er tekenen van afstoting te zien waren.

Zoals gebruikelijk in een academisch ziekenhuis keken er eerst relatief onervaren mensen naar het oog waarna er mensen met meer ervaring naar gingen kijken, tot aan een arts van het cornea-team toe die mij vertelde dat het goed was dat ik zo snel met het ziekenhuis had gebeld. Read more »

I have always had an above average interest in radioactivity.  It’s a subject with political, sociological and scientific aspects. I have been mostly interested in the scientific part, but I also closely follow any news and other developments. With the earthquake in Japan and the following nuclear disaster the discussion about nuclear energy has  been fired up after being quite silent for years. In the Netherlands there was talk about building a new reactor next to the existing plant in Borssele. Well, I guess it will be a bit harder now to get support for this plan…

To be honest, watching the developments with the damaged reactors in Japan got me thinking again. Is nuclear energy a proper way of generating electricity? Sure,  for the immediate surroundings it is very clean. There are virtually no CO2 emissions and with proper shielding and maintenance you’ll need some pretty advanced equipment to measure any radioactivity coming from a reactor. Still, uranium mining is not very nice for the environment and there is no clear solution for storage of waste. And, if a reactor malfunctions there is the possibility of widespread contamination as currently seen in Japan. So, while I am not against nuclear energy my support for it has weakened somewhat.

Anyway, enough rambling, how to monitor radiation with your computer!

Met mijn ogen gaat het vrij goed. Vorige week vrijdag zijn de rest van mijn hechtingen in het UMC door Dr. Rouwen verwijderd. Een enigszins irritante behandeling zoals ik eerder al heb beschreven. This article will try to explain how to monitor and graph temperatures remotely using Dallas Semiconductor DS18xx sensors, SNMP and Cacti. DS18xx sensors are relatively cheap, accurate and multiple sensors can be connected to a single bus.

Check out this hilarious rant from some American guy who seems to have an issue with spam filtering. When I read it I didn’t know whether I should be angry or rolling on the floor laughing.

In his article he makes the following (erronous) claims:

Spam filtering is similar to a mailman opening, reading and sorting your mail

Spam filtering is actually an automated process. There is no human behind a screen reading someones mail. In fact, implementation of spam filtering would be impossible using humans to read mail and classify it as spam, as it would be inefficient in terms of cost, scalability and speed.

The author claims that privacy is violated because of this “reading” of mail. It is not, because it is done by “dumb” computer programs  that detect patterns in e-mail that are characteristic of spam. These programs are unable to understand what actually is being discussed in e-mails. Read more »

Twee weken geleden was ik voor controle bij mijn lenzenspecialist in het LUMC te Leiden. Deze keek vooral naar mijn rechteroog en merkte op dat het er niet helemaal goed uitzag. Een oogarts werd er bij gehaald en deze was ook van mening dat er reden was voor grondiger onderzoek. Met spoed, want men zag mogelijke “infiltraten” (witte bloedcellen gestuurd door het immuunsysteem) of er zou sprake kunnen zijn van een bacteriële infectie. Read more »

Even een korte update over de toestand van mijn ogen.

Ik ben inmiddels alweer een tijdje aan het werk wat verder goed gaat. Dankzij het goede zicht in mijn rechteroog is het over het algemeen geen probleem om fulltime computerwerk te doen.

Ik zeg “over het algemeen” want de laatste week gaat het allemaal wat minder. Twee weken geleden merkte ik een rood plekje in mijn rechteroog bij de overgang van het oogwit (de sclera) naar het hoornvlies. Ik heb toen op advies van het ziekenhuis de lens uitgedaan. Een week later was er nog steeds een plekje zichtbaar dus ben ik langs het ziekenhuis gegaan voor een tussentijdse controle. Read more »

Het is op dit moment 275 dagen (of 9 maanden en 1 dag) geleden dat mijn rechteroog van een nieuw hoornvlies werd voorzien.  Na iets meer dan een half jaar mocht er een lens aangepast worden waardoor ik weer beschaafd zicht kreeg.

Bij de oogarts

Een paar weken geleden bezocht ik het UMC voor controle, en ik werd onderzocht door dokter Ebbelink, een oogartse in opleiding. Volgens haar verliep het genezingsproces voorspoedig en was mijn behaalde zicht meer dan gemiddeld te verwachten is. Bij het vooronderzoek werd door een assistente ook een visus van bijna 1.2 vastgesteld. Dit is dus hoger dan de standaard voor “normaal” zicht met een visus van 1, of in de volksmond ook wel “100% zicht” genoemd. Dit is uiteraard wel onder optimale omstandigheden. Vooral bij scherp tegenlicht en als ik net wakker ben wordt het licht soms behoorlijk verstrooid door het nog niet geheel heldere hoornvlies. Read more »
